This wheel-thrown ceramic baluster vase showcase the unpredictable beauty of the Obvara firing technique, a historic Baltic pottery tradition dating back to the 12th century. Pulled white-hot from the kiln at approximately 1,650°F (899°C) and quickly plunged into a fermented liquid mixture of flour, yeast, and water, the boiling solution scalds across the surface to trap carbonized, organic textures.
The resulting surface features dramatic vertical drips, high-contrast ivory splash marks, and a dark, mottled carbonized background that evokes natural wood grain or frosted stone. The flared rim and elegant tapering body blend classical form with an atmospheric, elemental surface finish.
